The Johor-based port said it handled 7.5mteu, but gave no breakdown of the figures. “This sharp increase was driven by strong organic growth from existing customers as well as volume from new customers,” the Johor-based port said.
Container volume from PTP’s main existing customers, Maersk Line and Evergreen, increased by 16% over the previous year.
PTP has also seen a number of new shipping lines call at the port during the year, including Hanjin, STX Pan Ocean, MOL, K Line and China Shipping.
“We were fortunate that some new shipping lines have decided to call at PTP,” said deputy chief executive Azlan Shahrim.
From just two shipping lines in its early days, PTP now has 26 shipping lines and box operators and is Malaysia’s largest container terminal.
“This has vastly improved connectivity and frequency, and enables us to provide shippers better access to the global market,” he added.
PTP is one of only seven ports worldwide recently chosen by Maersk Line for its new “Daily Maersk” service, which runs between Asia and North Europe.
“Our focus, as we grow to this significant size, is to continuously improve the quality of our services,” said Shahrim.
PTP is a 70:30 joint venture between Malaysian utilities and infrastructure group MMC Corp and AP Moller-Maersk’s APM Terminals. |
