MMC Port units win APSN green port award

KUALA LUMPUR — The Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) and Northport (M) Bhd, both units of MMC Port Holdings Sdn Bhd (MMC Ports), recently received the APEC Port Services Network (APSN) Green Port Award System.
Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Ab Aziz Kaprawi presented the awards during the opening ceremony of the APSN workshop on 'Safety of Dangerous Goods at Ports' held in Penang, MMC Ports said in a statement today.
MMC Ports group chief executive officer Ian Brian James said the company had embarked on various green initiatives in its ports by investing in environmentallyfriendly terminal handling equipment and other port infrastructure.
"In 2015, PTP received over 8,000 vessel calls and handled over nine million twentyfoot equivalent units of containers.
"In 2013, Northport became the first port in Malaysia to acquire environmentallyfriendly terminal handling equipment for containers via the purchase of 13 units of Electric Rubber Tired Gantry cranes," he said.
James said the company understood that the port's energy demand was considerable. "Therefore, it is our priority to look into reducing diesel fuel consumption and simultaneously lowering carbon dioxide emissions."
