Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) recently organised its annual full-day SPM (Malaysian Certificate of Education) motivational talk for 80 selected students from four secondary schools within the Gelang Patah area. Hosted at the port operator’s briefing room, the event was a joint effort with Johor Baru Education Department.

This year’s talk has been the ninth edition since PTP first organised such programme in 2007. More than 2,000 local secondary school students in Gelang Patah have benefitted from the programme. The programme is aimed at equipping the participants with learning techniques and improving students’ performance in the examination. It also provides the students with invaluable tips and motivates them to be mentally prepared for their big day. The annual affair is PTP’s long-term signature corporate social responsibility programme focusing on education and human capability building.

PTP interim CEO Steven Yoogalingam explains that the programme is organised as part of PTP’s continuous commitment in alleviating the level of education within its surrounding community. Through this programme, we hope that the local kids can benefit greatly and take this opportunity as their first stepping stone towards their future success.

One of Sekolah Menengah Tanjung Adang teachers, Rosilah Ahmad, lauded PTP’s continuous commitment in assisting the local students to improve their overall academic and non-academic achievements. She said this initiative should be replicated by more corporate companies. “This programme will definitely help our students and boost their motivation and self-confidence before they sit for the major national examination,” Rosilah added. The participant from SMK Taman Nusa Jaya, Mohamad Khalid Mohd Rasman, said: “I have managed to learn various tips and new skills throughout the programme. The activities are very enjoyable and insightful. I will definitely make use of the experience”. Apart from the motivational talk, PTP has various plans in line for other education-related initiatives, including the UPSR (Primary School Achievement Test) motivational camp, educational trip to local universities, distribution of schooling aid and many others. PTP, Malaysia’s largest container terminal, is a joint venture between MMC Corp Bhd (70%), a utilities and infrastructure group, and APM Terminals (30%), a leading global ports group with a global port network in 62 countries.

The port delivers reliable, efficient and advanced services to major shipping lines and box operators, providing shippers in Malaysia and abroad extensive connectivity to the global market
