The Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP), South-east Asia’s fastest growing transhipment hub has achieved a throughput of 2.05 million TEUs (20ft equivalent units) for last year, surpassing its own target of 2 million TEUs.
The 2.05 million TEUs represented an increase of about five times over the 418,000 TEUs registered in 2000, the company said in a statement yesterday.
PTP received a total 2,286 container vessel calls last year.
By the year-end, PTP also achieved productivity levels of an average of 29 moves an hour per crane, hence improving vessel turnaround time.
Its Chief Executive Officer Mohd Sidik Shaik Osman said in a statement that the 2.05 million TEUs “are a reflection of PTP’s resilience in facing the current economic out look”.
Last year, PTP also retained the Best Emerging Container Terminal award by Lloyd’s List Maritime Asia for the second year running.
The award recognized PTP’s high growth achievement with high productivity. In June 2001, PTP also gained international recognition by winning the Best Project Award from FIABCI (International Real Estate Federation).
On the outlook for this year, Sidik said: “Capacity at PTP is being increased and the 10 quay cranes ordered will boost capacity to around 4.55 million TEUs per annum.
“To take advantage of this, PTP is now actively pursuing new customers both from shipping and also in the free zone area.
“The year 2002 will also see the rail network to PTP operational. The new markets arising from this will extend PTP’s hinterland throughout Peninsular Malaysia.”
Since its formal launch on March 13, 2000, PTP has grown from strength to strength in terms of volume and productivity.
PTP offers six berths, each 360m long, and has one of the largest container yards in the region with a storage capacity of 110,000 TEUs
