Evergreen Begins Shifting to Port of Tanjung Pelepas

Japan Maritime Daily

Evergreen Marine Corp. has begun shifting its regional hub from Singapore to Malaysia’s Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP).

According to PTP, this week will see the phasing in of Evergreen services including the long-haul east- and westbound China-Europe-Mediterranean (CEM), the Far East Mediterranean (FEM) and the West Coast-Asia-Europe pendulum (WAE) services, adding six weekly mother vessel calls at the growing transshipment hub.

The maiden call at PTP by Evergreen’s Uni-Concord was witnessed by port officials and carrier representatives on Saturday.

The 1,038-TEU vessel is deployed on the Evergreen/Uniglory NSG feeder service.

Ever Apex, deployed on the NSB feeder service, arrived at the port on Sunday.

The terminal service agreement between Evergreen and PTP was signed on April 1.

Commented PTP chief executive officer, Sidik Shaik Osman: “PTP is honored to serve Evergreen Marine Corp. as its regional hub. Both PTP and Evergreen will benefit from the close relationship as partners to ensure excellent service levels.

“Our growth has received another unprecedented boost and the port will do all it can to further utilize PTP’s excellent connectivity to attract more common-user, distribution and logistics companies.”

In a related development, PTP reported that it has received three quay cranes from Shanghai, China, supplied by MMC-ZPMC.

MMC-ZPMC is a joint-venture between MMC Engineering & Construction Sdn Bhd (MMCEC) and Shanghai Zhenhua Port Machinery Company Limited (ZPMC).

The commissioning of the new super-post-Panamax cranes is expected to be completed by the end of September.

Another two MMC-ZPMC cranes are scheduled to arrive at PTP by the end of October.

The cranes have an outreach of 60 meters, allowing them to serve containerships with boxes stacked 22 wide; their twin-lift spreaders, meanwhile, make it possible to handle two 20-foot containers at one time.

With this delivery, PTP now has 22 super-post-Panamax quayside cranes. Upon the arrival of the final two units, PTP will be able to handle an estimated 4.5 million TEUs to five million TEUs annually.
