Evergreen Services: Confidence Vote For M'sian Ports - Dr Ling

JOHOR BAHARU, Oct 19 (Bernama) -- Evergreen Marine Corporation of Taiwan today officially launched its services at the Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP), reflecting the vote of confidence by the world's largest container shipping group in the capability of the fastest growing Malaysian port.
In launching the services, Transport Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ling Liong Sik said Evergreen would play a big role in the development of PTP as a major transshipment hub in the region as well as the other Malaysian ports.
"At the same time, Evergreen will benefit from PTP's higher standard of efficiency," he said.
He said PTP and Johor would benefit from the development due to Evergreen's strength in Johor.
He said the launch of Evergreen's services at PTP came after a long history of the company's business in Malaysia in the fields of marine and air transportation, logistics, manufacturing and hospitality which had helped Malaysia further develop those fields.
"Evergreen's aggressive drive into new markets such as Kuantan and Bintulu has facilitated trade growth from these markets. In fact, Evergreen is the pioneer service provider at Pasir Gudang Port and their role has been pivotal in the growth of containerised volume at Johor Port," he said.
Putting on record the Malaysian Government's gratefulness to Evergreen, Dr Ling said with the Evergreen hubbing at PTP, the port would use the opportunity of higher base volumes to attract more feeders and main lines as it developed and expanded the terminal.
"PTP's volume expectations of 2.5 million TEUs (twenty equivalent units) this year and over three million TEUs next year are commendable," he said.
He said PTP had started its phase two construction which involved dredging and reclamation for an additional eight berths and the construction of two additional berths by end of next year.
Evergreen Group Vice-Chairman S.S. Lin, in his speech, said Evergreen was proud to be associated with PTP.
"The port's fundamental elements coupled with its strong management team, complemented by Evergreen's direct service network worldwide, will surely benefit the customers in Johor and Malaysia," he said.
