DESPITE the gloomy economic outlook for 2002, major Malaysian ports are going ahead with their expansion and upgrading plans in preparation for long-term demand.

Port Klang, Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP), Penang Port and Kuantan Port will continue to focus on their potential growth areas while keeping operational costs minimal.

PTP chief executive officer Mohd Sidik Shaik Osman said the port’s area of focus was to aggressively pursue shipping lines and to also establish a more comprehensive feeder network.

“This remains as our key goal. Besides this, with the better shipping network next year, we expect to see very good headway in attracting more distribution centres and warehouses in the PTP Distripark.

“Phase 2 expansion plans are still ongoing and will be demand-led. With the additional 10 quay cranes with 22 box-outreach due for delivery in first and third quarter of year 2002 respectively, our capacity will be at its optimum for Phase One at 4.5 to 5 million TEUs annually.

This ensures PTP’s continued ability to attract large main lines,” he said.
