Datuk Chan said this during his first official visit to the port yesterday after being appointed transport minister in June to replace Dr Ling Liong Sik, who quit after 17 years.
Referring to the port’s performance, he noted that it was expected to increase its container haulage capacity to six million containers annually.
The target could be achieved once the construction of two new wharfs under its second phase was completed by the middle of next year.
The port now has six wharfs, which can handle 4.5 million to five million twenty-foot equivalent container units per year.
‘This will enable Tanjung Pelepas to attract many more shipping companies to call at its port. Some will make the port their regional hub,”he said of the expansion.
During visit, the minister was briefed on the port’s development by its chief executive officer, Datuk Mohd Sidik Shaik Osman.
