Five-fold TEU surge for PTP in 2001

Malaysia’s Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) has exceeded its target for 2001 despite container volumes being hit by the global economic downturn.
Throughput rose five-fold to 2.05 million TEUs from just 418,000 TEUs in 2000.
PTP, which completed its second full year of operation, hit the headlines last year when it lured Maersk Sealand from Singapore with an equity offer. Maersk Sealand boxes played a prominent role in the burgeoning volume for 2001.
While acknowledging that “a significant portion of the year 2001 volumes comes from Maersk Sealand,” PTP chief executive Mohd Sidik Shaik Osman pointed out that local cargoes were also playing an important role.
The arrival of 10 quay cranes this year will boost annual handling capacity to five million TEUs and the port expects to handle more containers once its rail network becomes operational this year.
