Giants promise faster turnaround time

Container Management

The fast growing Malaysian transshipment hub, Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP), has taken delivery of super post panamax cranes from Noell Crane Systems. They are the first in a batch of five quay cranes, and 15 rubber-tyred gantry cranes due for delivery throughout 2002.

Offloading of the cranes at PTP went smoothly, witnessed by PTP’s Chief Executive, Mohd Sidik Shaik Osman, port users and port staff. The cranes were rolled from a holding vessel to berth 6 on the PTP’s terminal.

The super post panamax quayside cranes from Noell are the largest quay cranes ever installed in South East Asia.

With an outreach of 60 metres, they have the capacity to handle 22 boxes across a container vessel. The cranes twin-lift spreader has a loading capacity of 61 tonnes, and a chassis alignment system, which will enable faster loading, and discharge of containers. The system also has a scanner that can tell the delivery truck the location and time to stop, resulting in shorter turnaround time.

These features were critical for PTP’s customers, Mohd Sidik commented.

“PTP also joins a few ports in the world that already have these cranes.

The cranes therefore put PTP in a leading position and will enable us to serve our customer with even higher efficiency levels,” he said.

With this delivery and commissioning, PTP will soon have 16 quaycranes operational. The next three cranes from Noell will be delivered before the end of first quarter of 2002, with another five units by MMC-ZPMC delivered by third quarter of 2002, completing the full number of quay cranes planned for Phase 1 of PTP.
