Historic triumph for PTP

The Star

The Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) in Johor has been named Container Terminal of the Year at the Asia Logistics Awards 2004, beating Singapore’s PSA Corporation and Hong Kong International Terminals.

This is the first time a Malaysian company has grabbed the prestigious industry award chosen by an independently audited ballot of the readers of Lloyd’s FTB Asia and the Asian readerships of other leading Informa Group.

Winners in each category were then chosen by a panel of 12 independent judges based in nine different countries who based their decisions on editorial presentations from each finalists.

“It certainly feels good to know that we are now in the same league as ports like PSA.

“We are pleased indeed to win the award now, as it has been our second nomination in the category,” said PTP chief executive officer Datuk Mohd Sidik Shaik Osman after receiving the trophy from Norasia Container Lines CEO Vikas Khan.

He said PTP was deeply honoured to have won the award especially in view of the highly competitive field in this category.

“We believe that this award is recognition that it is not size alone that makes a great container terminal.

“There are many other factors that play a role in the equation such as throughput growth rates, current future handling capacity, operational efficiency and the potential for future growth.

“Since we began operations four years ago, these elements have been our primary focus and this award is a vindication of our effort thus far,” said Sidik.

Dubbed South East Asia’s fastest growing port, PTP in Johor offers eight berths and it handled 3.49mil TEUs last year.

Former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad was presented with the Lloyd’s Hall of Fame Award for his contributions to the logistics industry in Malaysia

“It is very gratifying that people recognise that I have made some contributions to the logistics industry,” he said.

Dr Mahathir received the award from TT Club director of underwriting for Asia Pacific, Andrew Kemp at the event held at the Sheraton Imperial Hotel in Kuala Lumpur.

DHL Danzas Air and Ocean was selected for the Airfreight Forwarder of the Year while DHL took the Express and Mail Operator of the Year trophy.

Maersk Sealand and Maersk Logistics both emerged triumphant in the Shipping Line of the Year and Lead Logistics Provider of the Year awards respectively.

Prizes for the 3PL Award, Youth Development Award and Supply Chain Software Award went to Exel, Kerry Logistics and SSA Global respectively, making it, overall, a very even distribution in terms of the spread of different companies winning the different categories.

DHL Worldwide Express country manager Charles Brewer paid tribute to the roughly 20,000 people they employed around Asia, claiming they were the reason DHL had grabbed the awards.

“We are extremely happy. This win is a testament to all the people whom we have around Asia who work tirelessly to put us where we are,” he said.

Schenker Logistics was picked as the Project Forwarder of the Year.

IDS International managing director Paul Bradley snagged the award for the Supply Chain Manager of the Year.

The Asia Logistics Awards 2005 will be held in Shanghai.
