Kenwood begins PTP operations

KENWOOD Logistics Global Distribution Centre has begun operations at the Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP).
The Kenwood Global Distribution Centre (GDC) has an area of 15,050 square meters (160,000 square feet) and is a purpose-designed warehouse catering towards Kenwood's specific needs and requirements to an international distribution standard. It is located inside PTP's Distripark area, an area of about 400 acres with basic infrastructure in place. The GDC was built by PTP under a memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed on January 12, 2001 with Kenwood Logistics, which stated The PTP would build the warehouse according to Kenwood's requirements and then sub-lease the warehouse to Kenwood Logistics. Kenwood logistics, which is the logistics arm of the electronics manufacturer Kenwood, is to manage its global distribution centre at PTP.
The GDC's core activities will include storage and distribution of completed goods and parts of Kenwood products.
The distribution will include key markets in the US, Europe and the Far East, all of which are available through direct calls at PTP. PTP CEO, ~ohd Sidik Shaik Osman, welcomed the start of operations saying: 'The Kenwood global distribution centre with other soon-to-be operational warehouses will attract more shipping lines to call at the port. This represents a major step in our plans to establish a hinterland aroundPTP. It wjll also lead towards a direct increase of local cargo movement through delivery of additional cargo and supplies to the port for onward consolidation and distributi.on at the warehouse.
Mohd Sidik also congratulated Kenwood on becoming one of the port's first land anchor tenants and added: "PTP's fast growth is due to early players like Kenwood. Kenwood's entry will also lead towards fast growth of our Distribution Park as the nation's foremost logistics centre.
"All the 'land is now ready and we are offering potential users options for warehouses to be built for them or for the sub-lease of bare land. It is flexlble terms like these that will be beneficiaL"
Other companies that have taken advantage of these factors include Pelepas Logistics which is currently operational with two warehouses, MIEL (Malaysian Industrial Estates), Tiong Nam and JB Cocoa.
