Kenwood lures new friends in Malaysia

Lloyd’s List

The Malaysian Port of Tanjung Pelepas is confident a Kenwood global distribution center will attract more shipping lines to call at the port despite recent losses of MOL and APL.

“Kenwood starts in June and a few lines are looking to come just to carry their cargo, Dato’ Mohd Taufik Abdullah, Chairman of PTP told Lloyd’s list.

The logistics arm of the electronics manufacturing giant Kenwood, is to manage its global distribution center at PTP. Located directly behind the port it will be operational by June this year.

Dampening efforts by PTP to market itself as a multi-user port, MOL and APL recently dropped regular calls leaving stakeholder Maersk Sealand as the port’s only mainline operator.

“Of course we are concerned at being labeled a Maersk port. We are talking to other lines,” Dato’ Taufik said.

The port did not name prospective operators or when its expects them to start calling. The presence of Kenwood should help provide the port with some base cargo, low volumes having contributed to MOL dropping its call at the port.

On Friday Pelepas celebrated hitting the 1m teu mark just 571 days after starting operations, which it believes is a record for a new port. The one millionth teu was loaded on the Knud Maersk.

Of the 1m teu, 95% of the boxes were transhipment.

Maersk Sealand will be shifting its New Zealand service from Kaohsiung next week, the final phase of moving its transhipment hub from neighbouring Singapore.
