Malaysia’s PTP Handles 20 More Containers From Jan-Sep

Dow Jones

Malaysia’s Port of Tanjung Pelepas handled 20% more containers on year in the first nine months of the year, the operator of the port said Monday.

Pelabuhan Tanjung Pelepas Sdn. Bhd. Or PTP, said in an e-mailed statement that the port recorded container throughput of 3.03 million 20-foot units, or TEUs, in January-September.

The growth in container traffic underscores the port’s importance as Malaysia’s second-biggest container port after Port Klang. The traffic expansion also suggests the port is holding its own despite its proximity to Singapore, analysts said. PTP is a unit of conglomerate MMC Corp.

The bulk of the increase in containers handled at Tanjung Pelepas was due to a 20% on-year rise in transshipment cargo to 2.9 million TEUs, PTP said.

Local cargo rose 16% to 122,654 TEUs in the nine months, PTP added.

Tanjung Pelepas has an annual capacity of over TEUs, PTP said.
