Malaysia port adds bigger cranes

JOC Online

Malaysia's Port of Tanjung Pelepas, Southeast Asia's fastest-growing transshipment hub, added two super post-Panamax quay cranes to its dockside fleet.

They are the first of five quay cranes and 15 rubber-tired gantry cranes scheduled to be supplied by an Italian unit of Germany's Noell Crane Systems GmbH to Pelepas, in the southern state of Johore near Singapore.

The next three quay cranes will be delivered by the end of the first quarter. The gantry rigs are due by the third quarter of 2002, a spokesman said.

That will complete the complement of quay cranes for the port's first stage.

The port says the super post-Panamax cranes are the largest installed in Southeast Asia. They have an outreach of 60 meters (196 feet), or 22 boxes across.

The twin-lift spreader has loading capacity of 61 tons, and a chassis alignment system the company says allows faster loading and discharge of containers.

With this delivery and those en route, PTP will have 16 quay cranes operational.

In the year to October, PTP handled close to 1.7 million TEUs out of a targeted 2 million total units for the year.
