Malaysia Port Of Tanjung Pelepas Container Vol +31% 2003

Kuala Lumpur (Dow Jones)-Malaysia’s Port of Tanjung Pelepas Wednesday said it handled 3.5 million 20-foot shipping containers in 2003, a 31% rise from the 2.66 million in 2002.

The port, based in southern Johor state, said the number of shipping containers in 2002, rose 30% from a year earlier in 2001.
 
“A new monthly record was also set in the month of October (2003) which recorded a throughput of 332,314 twenty foot equivalent container units, or TEUs, the port said in a statement.
 
Container vessel calls to the port rose 26.6% to 3,148 calls in 2003, from 2,486 calls in 2002.
 
“To maintain PTP’s (Port of Tanjung Pelepas) position as a premier regional transshipment hub, we will continue to target aggressive growth especially with the expected completion of an additional 720 meters of wharf early this year,” the port’s Chief Executive Officer Mohd Sidik Shaik Osman Said/
 
The Port of Tanjung Pelepas is controlled by businessman Syed Mokhtar Albukhary who also controls listed Malaysia Mining Corp. Bhd.
