Nilai Inland Port (NIP) in Negri Sembilan is developing its services in a bid to become an intermodal container hub for Port Klang and Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP).
Its general manager Sreedharan Nair said the port has been given licences to operate its own haulage service and has invested RM20 (US$5.2) million to acquire equipment.
‘We can take advantage of our location between Port Klang and PTP to offer shippers the use of our warehouse and container freight station for storage, packing, stuffing and unstuffing, and do the necessary documentation for both import and export goods,’ said Sreedharan.
‘We have started partial operations in our haulage service and expect to purchase the remaining equipment necessary by June 2002,’ said Sreedharan.
In addition NIP has finalised discussions with PTP to provide an alternative ‘land feeder’ service for cargo between NIP and PTP.
‘It will be a joint operation between PTP, Malaysian Railway and NIP and we hope to start it as soon as the railway line connecting PTP to the main grid is completed. We will have three trains a day in and three out,’ Sreedharan said.
