MALAYSIA'S Port of Tanjung Pelepas handled 7.6m TEU in 2013 and managers are boldly predicting that throughput will increase to some 9m TEU in 2014.

Tanjung Pelepas reported growth of 6.4% in the first six months of the year and throughput at the Malaysian transhipment hub is likely to accelerate in the second half, following the opening of berths 13 and 14 in May, which have provided the port with an additional 720 m of container quay.

The port has also been investing in superstructure to handle the largest containerships plying the seas. Eight new quay cranes have been purchased, supported by 26 rubber-tyred gantries, which were delivered during the first quarter of 2014.

A port spokesperson said improvements in productivity that have increased vessel turnaround speeds have created new business opportunities by "inducing new services or generating other revenue streams from the available capacity".

The latest expansion has boosted the Tanjung Pelepas' annual container handling capacity by 25% to 10.5m TEU.

"We have been gearing up terminal capacity and facilities to accommodate additional volume projections," said the spokesperson.

"PTP's new berths and new equipment will be able to handle the Maersk Line Triple-E vessels. Only a few ports globally are able to handle these mega container vessels and PTP is one of them."
