Transport Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ling Liong Sik will hold an urgent meeting with the Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) and other related agencies to streamline government customs clearance procedures on Monday.
Ling said he would hold discussions with PTP management, Royal Customs and Excise Department and Marine Department to review customs procedures at PTP so that it does not jeopardise the port's profitability.
He said the current procedures, requiring all transhipment boxes kept in the free trade area to be examined, were causing inconvenience to customers.
‘I will have discussions with them on whether or not the Customs should inspect transhipment boxes.
If you delay boxes, you chase customers away and they will go to Singapore or Port Klang because practices are so much more deregulated there,’ he said.
