Massive leap ahead for Pelepas

Fairplay

The Malaysian Port of Tanjung Pelepas has posted a “staggering” 25% leap in volumes hanlded in the first half of the year on the back of rising activity on the main trade routes, especially between Asia and Europe.

In the period to 30 June, PTP, which was launched in January 2000 as a competitor to giant neighbour Singapore for container transhipment business, handled a record 2M TEU.

Volumes were also boosted by a 22% growth in cargo from the bustling Johor hinterland, which touched 77,500 TEU. “The phenomenal growth at PTP has been attributed to the continuing strong global economic upturn, as well as the addition of a number of new services calling at the port,” PTP explained.

The port, which acts as a hub for liner giants Maersk Sealand and Evergreen Marine, will be adding two more berths this month that will push annual capacity from the current 4.5M to 6M TEU.
