Pelepas plans to join US security network

(SINGAPORE) The neighbouring Malaysian Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) is seeking to join the US Customs-Trade Partnership Against Terrorism (C-TPAT).

Under the C-TPAT, businesses are required to establish policies enhancing their security practices and those of their business partners along the supply chain.

Aimed at protecting US and global commerce from terrorism, the ultimate goal is for C-TPAT to cover the entire breadth of the supply chain, including all transportation modes, brokers, manufacturers, warehouse operators and ports.

In a statement, PTP said it welcomed the US Customs move 'as a positive initiative to create a standard supply chain security worldwide'.

PTP added that it was in active discussions with both the US Customs and US Embassy in Kuala Lumpur on the issue.

The initiative runs in tandem with the US Customs' Container Security Initiative, under which it is pushing to have US-destined cargo pre-screened at foreign ports and includes the stationing of US Customs officers in these ports.
