JOHOR BAHARU, May 3 (Bernama) -- Malaysia's largest container port, Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP), has embarked on a roadshow in India aimed at enhancing awareness of the port's position as a major transhipment hub of the region.
The roadshow is also intended to promote its Free Zone to Indian manufacturers, shippers, forwarders, logistics providers and cargo owners, PTP said in a statement released here.
It added that the main objective of the roadshow is to attract companies from India which have plans to expand their businesses in the Iskandar Development Region (IDR) and do business in PTP's Free Zone, the main Free Trade Zone in the IDR.
"Being one of the key strategic drivers in the development and success of the IDR, PTP has a role to promote Malaysia's new economic growth area through our Pelepas Free Zone," PTP said.
"Through this roadshow, we hope that Indian investors will realize that the Pelepas Free Zone, its hinterland and the IDR offer a very strategic location for them to expand their businesses," it said.
PTP chief executive officer Harun Johari said recently that the port, by virtue of the global sea connectivity it offers and its Free Zone, could help the government to achieve its ambition to develop the IDR into South-East Asia's next metropolis by driving the creation of an integrated logistics hub which also involves the Senai Airport and Johor Port.
Developed over an area of more than 2,000 acres, the Pelepas Free Zone is Malaysia's first Free Zone consisting of commercial and industrial parks which are integrated within a single boundary as the port's terminal.
Last year, PTP indirectly contributed more than RM13 billion in local and foreign investments to Johor, including about RM2 billion of foreign direct investment in the Pelepas Free Zone.
Global companies such as the BMW spare parts distribution centre, Flextronics, CIBA Vision and Cameron International are already operating in the Pelepas Free Zone.
