Port of Tanjung Pelepas gets ready to meet 4m TEU target

Malaysia’s Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) is optimistic about achieving 4m TEU throughput this year, thanks to the robust Asian economy, said PTP general manager Brian Paul today in Seoul.

He said Malaysia’s annual throughput hit about 10m TEU last year, with PTP handling 34% of the total. Meanwhile, throughput in the early 1990s was just 1m TEU, an increase due to port privatisation and government support.

Paul pointed to considerable logistics and manufacturing investment in the Tanjung Pelepas Free Zone (TPFZ), including BMW’s recent move of its Asia-Pacific headquarters from Singapore, and several facilities being built by Korean manufacturers.

Construction of PTP’s 720m berths 7-8, will be completed by mid-2004, adding 1.5m TEU additional annual capacity.

The port will construct more berths on 2.88km reclaimed land, depending on market demand.
