Bunker Ports News

The Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) has successfully passed another significant milestone when it became the first Malaysian terminal to hit the 8 million TEU in a year. The breakthrough was made early this month and the port is optimistic to hit 8.6 million TEUs by end of this year.

Commenting on this achievement, Glen Hilton, Chief Executive Officer of Port of Tanjung Pelepas, said "Passing this latest milestone further underlines our position as the leading container terminal in Malaysia. We certainly could not have done this without the commitment and the dedication of our staff to provide our customers with fast and efficient service over the years. We are also thankful to the government and local authorities, customers and all of our stakeholders for their continuous support towards us".

Glen also said that PTP has seen steady growth since the port started its operation fifteen years ago. The port has grown tremendously from just 400,000 TEUs handled in year 2000. The port is confident that it can grow and continue to record robust growth over the years. "The completion of our berth 13 and 14 in the second quarter of this year complete with new advanced equipment has increased PTP's capacity to 12.5 mil TEUs a year. We are expecting the container market to grow primarily on the back of global shipping access hence utilizing our port capacity.

Hitting 9 million TEUs mark is our target for 2015 and it will certainly create another great milestone for PTP. We are confident with strong organic growth from PTP's existing customers as well as volume from new customers will eventually increase our container volume over the next three to five years and thus enabling the port to continue becoming the catalyst to economic and social benefits to Johor state and the Iskandar Malaysia region".
