Malaysia’s biggest transhipment hub, Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP), handled a record 1,269,389 TEU in May 2025, marking its third consecutive monthly high, driven in part by the newly launched Gemini Cooperation between Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd earlier this year. With the latest record, PTP, a joint venture between MMC Group and Netherlands-based APM Terminals, surpassed its previous records of 1.18m TEU in March and 1.21m TEU in April.
“This latest milestone surpasses our April record by 53,000 TEU. What a remarkable leap. With this momentum, we anticipate a robust year ahead,” said PTP Chairman Tan Sri Che Khalib Mohamad Noh.
“This milestone goes beyond a display of our ability to push limits; it reflects the strong and promising collaboration we have with every single one of our truly valued customers at this leading transhipment hub, including the newly established Gemini Cooperation between Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd,” said PTP Chief Executive Officer Mark Hardiman.
“At PTP, we are committed to maintaining consistently high productivity, even as volumes grow and demands intensify, such as those from the Gemini Cooperation network. This stability adds significant value for our customers, and ensuring schedule reliability remains at the heart of our service commitment.”
In addition to throughput highs, PTP reported new operational benchmarks, including 178,679 quayside moves in a single week, 15,041 moves within a 12-hour shift, and 1,442 container moves in a single hour.
Capacity buildup
To keep up with the rising volumes, in February 2025, PTP signed a deal with ZPMC to purchase 58 electric RTGs, which are automation-ready. That same month, eight e-RTGs ordered from Japan’s Mitsui E&S under a separate 35-unit contract arrived at the terminal. The eight-wheel cranes, delivered ahead of schedule, feature a 40t capacity under the spreader, a 1-over-5 lift height and 26.5m internal span. According to PTP, the new cranes will enhance handling capabilities and support rising demand from the Gemini Corporation.
The joint venture has also continued upgrading its STS fleet. In October 2024, PTP ordered four Super Post-Panamax STS cranes from Sany Marine Heavy Industry, bringing its total STS fleet to 58 units.
PTP, which has a design capacity of 13m TEU, became the first port in Malaysia to handle more than 12m TEU in a calendar year in 2024.
