PTP 1Q throughput up 27

The Edge Daily

The Port of Tanjung Pelepas recorded a 27.79% jump in container throughput to 957,500 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) for the first quarter of 2004 from 749,231 TEUs previously, thanks to an increase in the number of shipping services and local cargo growth.

The port said in a statement on April 1 that vessel calls also rose 7.7% to 791 during the period.

In terms of productivity, in February a new berth production record of 302 moves per hour was set during operations on the vessel Skagen Maersk during which 4,613 moves were completed in less than 16 hours.

Commenting on the first three months' operations, PTP chief executive officer Datuk Mohd Sidik Shaik Osman said: “This first quarter was a very good start to the year indeed. These latest figures have shown that PTP continues to register robust growth despite increasingly competitive market conditions.”

Sidik said the construction of BMW’s Asian spare parts distribution centre was progressing as scheduled and should be completed by June 2004.

In line with Container Security Initiative (CSI) requirements, the container scanning facilities in PTP are also fully operational, he added.
