Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP), Malaysia’s biggest single port operator and a subsidiary of MMC Corp Bhd (MMC Corp), has strengthened its position as the busiest container port in Malaysia after hitting an all-timehigh of 800,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in August.
The latest record firmly places PTP on the road to achieve target total container throughput of 9.2 million TEUs for 2015.
PTP container volume for the first eight months this year has registered a growth of 8.9% compared to the same period last year.
“Positive improvements on productivity in container operations and better optimization of resource were seen as the main reason behind this latest breakthrough,” said PTP Chief Executive Officer Glen Hilton. “With the strong support from PTPs existing customer as well as volume from new customer, we are confident that PTP is on track to continue significant growth,” he added.
Last year, PTP handled 8.5 million TEUs container throughput and simultaneously became the first port in Malaysia to achieve such feat. PTP was also one of the only three port in the world that recorded double digit growth and placed 18th in world’s top ranking port in 2014.
PTP completed phase two of its masterplan through a recent expansion involving building two new berth, three blocks of containers yard, procurement of new quay cranes and electrifying existing rubber-tyred gantries
