PTP Box Throughput Soars 37% During 1st Hf

Japan Maritime Daily

The Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) has reported that it handled 1.6 million TEUs during the first six months of 2003 - a 37 percent increase over the corresponding period of 2002, when it moved 1.17 million TEUs.

PTP said the growth was the result of Evergreen Marine Corp. shifting from Singapore to the Malaysian port, as well as the growth of PTP existing customers in terms of volumes, vessel service calls, and local cargo.

PTP chief executive officer (CEO) Datuk Mohd Sidik Shaik Osman commented: gWe are pleased with the growth levels which were positive despite challenges facing the world economy.PTP will continue its focus on building up its land base through additional logistics customers and also the phase two terminal expansion.

The Phase two of PTP involves dredging and reclamation for an additional eight berths and the initial construction of an additional two berths, each 360 meters in length. The project will add approximately 1.5 million TEUs of annual capacity to PTP current capacity of 4.5 million to five million TEUs.

The Malaysian port said phase two development is on target to be completed in early 2004.
