The Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) is confident of reaching its target of handling two million TEUs (twenty ft equivalent units) of containers by the fourth quarter of this year.
Its Chairman Datuk Mohd Taufik Abdullah said between February and April this year, the port had already handled 500,000 TEUs; thus reaching the target would no be a problem.
Taufik said Maersk would also relocate its services for the New Zealand bound cargo from Singapore to PTP beginning this coming Wednesday which would contribute to a rise in cargo volume.
He said PTP had proven its capability in the international port fraternity as the only port worldwide to reach the one million TEUs within the shortest period.
Taufik said ports around the world would normally require years before they could reach the one million TEUs, but PTP achieved the figure within 571 days.
“This is certainly an impressive growth for a new port like us and we’ll strive harder to become a world class transhipment hub,” he told reporters last Friday.
Taufik was speaking after commemorating PTP’s achievement of hitting one million TEUs, at the wharf side, in a ceremony attended by over 100 customer representatives from main line, feeders, distribution and logistic companies.
The latest TEUs were handled on board Knud Maersk, a vessel with a length of 318 metres and gross registered tonnage of 81,488 metric tonne that is deployed n the east bound Asia-Europe service.
