Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) handled a record 541,329 TEUs (20-foot equivalent units) from April to June 2001, up 40 per cent from 386,394 TEUs in the first quarter this year.
A statement yesterday said the figure puts PTP’s half yearly performance at a total of 927,723 TEUs.
The transhipment portion in both quarters remained at about 95 per cent with local import and export cargo increasing month-by-month adding to PTP’s attractiveness to local shippers exporting to global destinations.
The statement said there were 885 vessel calls in the second quarter, 595 of which were container-vessel calls, compared to 791 vessel calls in the first quarter of which 531 were container-vessel calls.
PTP CEO Mohd Sidik Shaik Osman said: “The 40 per cent increase (in TEU throughput) exceeded our expectations.”
“Both management and staff are now looking at further targets and challenges.”
The second quarter saw the inclusion of Maersk Sealand’s New Zealand service supported by an expanding feeder network.
Other key developments included the Distribution Park with a growing number of tenants including Pelepas Logistics’ two warehouses and Kenwood Logistics’ 15,000 sq metres warehouse. Warehouses under construction include Tiong Nam’s 10,000 sq metres warehouse, Malaysian Industrial Estate facilities, and an additional common-user warehouse.
