Malaysia - Johor's Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) is on a campaign to court more shipping lines, said the port's chief Captain Ismail Hashim.
"We are actively in negotiations with the top 10 shipping companies in terms of fleet size," Captain Ismail Hashim, CEO of PTP was quoted as saying in Bernama.
Details of the 10 shippers have yet to be disclosed.
The captain said the current economic downturn is providing shippers an opportunity to analyse their own operations and consider improvements. In the meantime, PTP aims to attract them with faster turnaround and minimal time wastage.
"We have a straight quay line of about 5.4km which makes it very convenient for ships of any length to berth alongside... Due to the convenient design of the port, movements within the port are very fast, and this saves a lot of time and transportation cost for our customers," he told ProcurementAsia.
"We also have the capacity to give competitive pricing to these lines," he continued.
According to him, shippers are taking a second look at the deployment of their vessels and could be forging ties with competitors due to current economic conditions.
"They are trying to find ways and means to manage the business level they have, with the existing oversupply of capacity," he said.
