PTP expanding
Tradewinds
The Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) in Malaysia is lining up a major expansion drive.
The world’s seventeenth busiest container port will spend up to MYR 3bn ($923.5m) on extra capacity and infrastructure upgrades over the next few years.
"The expansion includes the construction of two new berths at a cost of MYR 360m and work commenced earlier this year. The berths will increase PTP's annual terminal handling capacity to 10m teu from the present 8m teu, to cater to growth over the next 18 months," said chief executive officer, Harun Johari.
He also said that PTP had recorded double-digit growth since starting operations in 2000. Last year, it achieved throughput of 5.5m teu.
A further MYR 800m would be invested in two more berths to bring the total of 14, depending on the global economic situation.
New cranes, a new electrical sub-station and more container yards are also on the cards.
