PTP free trade zone gets tenant

Business Times Singapore

Malaysia’s Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) free trade zone will get a boost in the next week, with the opening of new facility for German third party logistics company Schenker.

Schenker said it chose PTP for its seventh Malaysian operations base because of its strategic location, good connectivity and ‘ competitive edge’.

The warehouse is about 50,000 sq feet, and is part of Schenker’s previously announced plans to double the size of its existing Malaysian operations to 500,000 sq feet. Regionally headquartered in Singapore, the company operates a similar centre in Tuas, and a 237,000 sq ft warehouse at Changi South.

‘PTP has become a success story for Malaysia. Scheker Malaysia will benefit from this strategic location as well,’ managing director Wolfgang Laabs said in a statement.

He cited PTP’s access to the North-South highway, proximity to Singapore, Pasir Gudang and Senai Airport, and the presence of main lines Maersk Sealand and Evergreen Marine for sea connections as key factors.

‘The active support of the PTP authorities has been excellent. We are more than confident that this new logistics facility will mean more efficiency, quality and speed for our customers, thus providing a competitive edge.’

Schenker said it is ‘mainly active in the automotive and high tech industries’ in this region, providing just-in-time delivery of parts and spare parts for production.
