GELANG PATAH: More than 200 orang asli children in Kampung Simpang Arang are ready to get all dressed up for school when the 2010 session starts on Jan 4.
They each received a school bag, stationery, shoes, uniforms, and RM100 pocket money from authorities of the Port Of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP).
One of the recipients Elias Uni, 14, said he was happy that he had a new school bag.
“I am very grateful for the new items. All these while, I have been carrying an old bag to school.
“I cannot wait for the new term to start as I want to show off my new school bag to my friends,” said the fisherman’s son who has eight siblings.
Village community chairman Noore Kasi, 42, said the gifts were a welcome relief for parents who would otherwise have to fork out at least RM120 per child in preparation for the new school term.
“All the parents here are very grateful to PTP,” he said.
Meanwhile PTP human resource general manager Zakaria Abd Rahim said this was the third year that the authority had organised such an event to help needy children.
“Contributing towards education is one of our main concerns through our corporate social responsibility programmes,” he said.
Nusajaya assemblyman Datuk Aziz Sapian urged other companies to emulate the example of PTP.
