First port in Malaysia to attain VTMIS, which will boost vessel traffic movement and navigation

Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) has stepped up measures to become a green port by offering an advanced vessel traffic monitoring process by introducing the Marine Resource Management System (MRMS) and Vessel Traffic Monitoring and Information System (VTMIS).

PTP, the country's largest container terminal, is the first port in Malaysia to attain the VTMIS.

The systems are from a joint collaboration between PTP and the Johor Port Authority (known by its Malay acronym LPJ – Lembaga Pelabuhan Johor).

VTMIS is a service that primarily provides improvement in terms of efficiency of vessel traffic movement and navigation within port approaches or through hazardous areas.

Both the latest systems have the ability to reduce the company's carbon footprint, specifically paper usage.

It is part of PTP's continuing investment in green technology and sustainable development.

Pelabuhan Tanjung Pelepas Sdn Bhd acting CEO Johannes de Jong said environmental sustainability is recognised in its governing policies and the company is determined to take proactive steps towards that.

"MRMS & VTMIS not only can help us improve the environment, but further strengthen the safety and security of vessel navigation within the PTP terminal.

"One of the main services provided by these systems is to provide PTP with much greater levels of situational awareness, with integrated sensors and communication services that can cover an area that is well beyond the capability of the human eye.

"The systems are also able to provide information on dynamic weather conditions. Furthermore, they also offer real-time vessel status information to all customers; hence decisions can be made effectively,' he added.

LPJ GM Razif Ahmad said the sstems enabled the port operator to minimise potential harmful environmental impact to stakeholders and the surroundings.

He expresses LPJ's support towards the new measures and any continuous efforts to improve safety, security, the environment and maritime business growth in the region as a whole.

PTP services major shipping lines and box operators, providing shippers in Malaysia and abroad extensive connectivity to the global market.

The company is joint venture between MMC Corp Bhd (70%), a utilities and infrastructure group, and APM Terminals (30%), a global ports group with a network linking 62 countries.
