Petaling Jaya: MMC Corp Bhd's 70%-owned The Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) has recently become the first Malaysian container terminal to hit the eight million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in a year.

The breakthrough was made early this month and the port was optimistic to hit 8.6 million TEUs for 2014.

"Passing this latest milestone further underlines our position as the leading container terminal in Malaysia. We certainly could not have done this without the commitment and dedication of our staff to provide our customers with fast and efficient service over the years. We are also thankful to the government and local authorities, customers and all of our stakeholders for their continuous support," said PTP chief executive officer Glen Hilton in a statement to StarBiz yesterday.

Hilton added that PTP had seen steady growth since the port started operations 15 years ago. "The port has grown tremendously from just 400,000 TEUs handled in 2000 and is confident it can grow and continue to record robust growth over the years," he said.
