THE Port of Tanjung Pelepas’ (PTP) handling capacity is expected to increase to 5 million 20ft equivalent units (TEUs) a year, with the receipt of its additional yard cranes.

PTP chief executive officer Mohd Sidik Shaik Osman said the port took delivery of five new rubber tyred gantry (RTG) cranes yesterday, the second batch from a total of RTG cranes to be supplied to it by Noell Crane Systems GmbH of Italy.

PTP said in a statement that with this delivery and commissioning, it would soon have 52 RTGs operational for its yard.

The final batch of 5 RTGs from Noell will be delivered by the end of the 2nd quarter of this year.

PTP had received the first batch of five RTG cranes from Noell in January this year, together with two units of the Super Post Panamax quayside cranes.

An additional 15 RTGs will be acquired by the end of this year to make the total number of RTGs for PTP’s phase 1 operation to 72 units.

The port currently offers six berths of 360 metres each in length, thereby offering 2.16km of linear wharf in length. – Bernama
