The Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) joined forces with the Johor Port Authority (LPJ) to lend a helping hand to the community of Gelang Patah by organising the annual Hari Raya Aidilfitri Aid Distribution Programme.

A member of MMC Corp Bhd, container terminals PTP and LPJ aimed to support and help those from underprivileged families, especially ones impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic during the month of Syawal.

A total of 200 families from five villages, namely Kampung Pok, Kampung Ladang, Kampung Tanjung Adang, Kampung Pekajang and Kampung Tiram Duku in Mukim Tanjung Kupang, Gelang Patah, received special aid in the form of food vouchers and essential goods.

PTP CEO Marco Neelsen said since the port commenced its operations in 2009, the group has been at the forefront of championing social causes by investing resources into taking care of the sustainability of its community and environment respectively.

“Just like last year, the programme focused on providing aid and support to those struggling to stay afloat during the pandemic. We really hope the little help that we are extending will bring about some relief to the beneficiaries of the programme during Aidilfitri.

“PTP and LPJ worked closely with all village heads in distributing the aid to recipients without jeopardising their safety.

“It was important for all of us involved to swiftly distribute (the aid) to ensure it was procured and transported in a timely and safe manner,” Neelsen said.

Johor Public Works, Transportation and Infrastructure Committee chairman Mohd Solihan Badri said the collaboration between LPJ, PTP and MMC demonstrated the best synergy between private business entities and government authorities in spurring the economic growth of the state and nation, as well as in elevating the community’s standard of living through its various outreach programmes.

“As the port grows and continues to be successful, it is important that the community in the surrounding area is not forgotten,” he said.

LPJ chairman Rosnan Fathlal said a big part of the groups’ corporate social responsibility initiatives include activities to engage and serve the underprivileged within PTP and Johor Port areas.

“The programme jointly organised with PTP, for example, is to reach out to those in need within the villages nearby and help ease their burden, not only during Ramadhan, but also as they prepare for Hari Raya,” Rosnan said.

Both PTP and LPJ have previously conducted various efforts such as distributing essential items to old folks’ homes, orphanages and frontliners; as well as organising “gotong royong”, school disinfection programme, mangrove planting and many more.
