PTP marks one millionth box

The Star Maritime

IN a record period of 571 days since the start of operations on Oct 10, 1999, the Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) handled its one millionth TEU on Friday.

The one millionth box was handled on board the vessel Knud Maersk deployed on the AE2 eastbound Asia-Europe service.

The achievement established PTP as one of the world's fastest-growing ports.

The loading of the one millionth box was witnessed by PTP chairman Datuk Mohd Taufik Abdullah and more than 100 customer representatives from main lines, feeders, distribution and logistics companies and government representatives.

"This fast growth in a short period is unprecedented. We wish to thank to all customers for helping us achieve our first million TEUs," said Taufik.

He said the achievement has spurred the port team to achieve new levels of excellence.

"Our goal is to exceed shipping-line expectations of productivity. With new equipment and state-of-the-art systems, we are working towards re-setting the world standard of crane and vessel productivity levels."

On challenges faced by the port, Taufik said that many early challenges had been overcome after a surge of volumes in the last quarter of last year.

"We have an excellent, highly motivated, experienced and dynamic workforce which has taken us this far in such a short period.

"Our next area of focus is to increase capacity and attract more main lines handling transhipment cargo."

Along with its Phase Two expansion, Taufik said that PTP would soon be the largest port in the country in terms of size and volume and a leading transhipment centre for South-East Asia.

He said the port was confident of reaching its target of two million TEUs this year.

Since it began operations, PTP surged ahead in volume growth after securing a strategic partnership with Maersk Sealand in Aug 2000.

Lines calling at the port include MCC Transport, Bengal Tiger Lines, Kimtrans, Orient Express Line, QC Container Line, Bangladesh Shipping Corporation and Bayswater.
