The appointment of Kumpulan PerEdar Sdn Bhd (KPSB) as the master dealer of ExxonMobil’s bottled liquefied petroleum gas is paving the way for the establishment of a bunkering facility at Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP).
KPSB, which operates the Kedai Jimat retail chain also has a bunkering licence, which ExxonMobil is said to be take advantage of to offer bunker oil at the Johor Port.
At source said if PTP endorses a KPSB-ExxonMobil deal, the port could have its first bunkering facility within two years, with KPSB offering the service and ExxonMobil supplying the petroleum and diesel.
The two companies signed a business collaboration pact on Tuesday.
It is understood that they are looking at building a marine bunker fuel oil blending and packaging complex that would serve both local and foreign vessels.
Initial investment in the proposed venture will be about RM20 million, but the project may eventually develop into a billion-ringgit complex, the source said.
“A detailed technical and investment plan for the project will be worked out soon” the source added.
ExxonMobil has had a presence of more that 100 years in the country’s petroleum industry, both downstream and upstream. It currently accounts for about half of the total oil supplies in Malaysia.
Likewise, 70 percent of Peninsular Malaysia’s gas needs is met by the group’s 1.3 billion cubic feet natural gas output per day.
It operates the 88,000 barrels per day refinery at Port Dickson and holds a 20 per cent participating interest in the Multi-product Pipeline and Klang Valley Distribution Terminal.
