Shipping Times Online

THE Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) has moved another step closer in its quest to become the region's transhipment hub centre, with the official opening of Pelepas-Brigantine Container Services Sdn Bhd (PBCS), its maintenance and repair (M and R) service arm.

The official opening also saw the exchange of shareholders' agreements of PBCS, watched by more than 100 guests comprising representatives from shipping lines, third-party logistics providers, shippers, government officials and port personnel.

PBCS is a joint-venture effort between PTP and Brigantine Services Ltd of Hong Kong, an established M and R services companies based in Hong Kong with branches in several major ports in China.

In a statement, Brigantine Hong Kong managing director Lars Bo Gronsendt said that "PBCS will be able to draw on the strengths of its parent companies and in turn offer competitive costs and high-quality M and R services to port users".

PTP chief executive officer Mohd Shaikh Osman said the official opening of PBCS is a vital step for PTP in its effort to provide comprehensive container services to current and potential customers.

"The on-dock facility will also ensure that containers delivered to local shippers will meet their requirements.

"We also see this as having a direct result of increased local usage of PTP," he added.

PBCS operates at a 6,000 sq m on-dock area at the back of Berth 6 of PTP.

Incorporated on January 29 this year, PBCS started operations on February 21 2001.

PBCS offers almost every aspect of maintenance and repair of containers, including evaluation, estimation, repair, scrap, cleaning, welding and other relevant repair services.

It has a current workforce strength of 24 workers.

These services and facilities are expected to complement PTP's goal to provide a one-stop centre for container handling in this region.
