Kolkata, May 04: Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP), Malaysia's largest container port in terms of volume, On Friday started a new service to provide direct connectivity to India's east coast.
PTP chairman Datuk Mode Sidik Shaik Osman said the service, Orient Express Lines (OEL), would enhance the company's regional connectivity as well as provide a faster turn-around time for shippers to send goods between Johor in Malaysia and the east coast of India.
"This new service provides Indian shippers with more options to deliver their cargo to various destinations around the world as PTP, being a major transhipment port of the region, has connectivity to most ports worldwide," Datuk said.
The company is doing roadshows in India to attract businessmen eyeing expansion in the multi-million-dollar Iskandar Development Region (IDR) in south Johor.
PTP sources said a vessel 'Marclipper' was flagged off from the Kidderpore dock here, which would be followed by 'OEL Excellence' leaving PTP five days later for Kolkata.
OEL will deploy four vessels on this new coastal service named 'Straits Bengal Service'.
PTP currently has an annual handling capacity of eight million teus.
