PTP on target

Malaysia’s Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) is on target to complete the first berth of its Phase 2 development early next year. Phase 2 involves dredging and reclamation works for a further eight berths over a total 2800m of quay. Initially, tow berths, with a combined overall length of 720m will be built.
In a statement PTP said that dredging and reclamation is nearing 75 per cent completion. The dredging process will widen the port’s access channel from 250m to 420m and increase the draft to 16mm from the current 15m. Phase 2 draft alongside will be 19.5m ( as at Phase 1 )
Phase 2 is almost a linear extension of Phase 1, with the new berths being built at an angle of 5deg to the existing quay line. The first 360m berth is expected to be completed in early 2004 and the second shortly thereafter. Together the two berths will add 1 million TEU to PTP’s annual capacity.
It is not yet clear how many additional quay cranes will be required for the first two berths. Three of the five ZPMC cranes delivered last year for Phase I have articulated bogies to negotiate the 5deg bend between Phase I and Phase 2. Therefore, vessels can be served at Phase 2 before any further cranes have been ordered.
