Skali News
To serve main line needs at PTP and to spur logistics sector growth, PTP has set-up an international standard container maintenance & repair (M&R) facilities within the port container yard area.
Pelepas-Brigantine Container Services Sdn Bhd, a PTP joint venture with Brigantine Services Limited of Hong Kong was incorporated on January 29, 2001 with a planned service commencement by end February 2001. Pelepas-Brigantine will offer all aspects of maintenance and repair of containers to main lines serving PTP. The 18,000 sq metre on-dock area will also double-up as a storage area for repositioning of empty containers of PTP. The move by PTP is to meet main line needs and as a value-added service to existing operations. The depot is expected to offer container repairs, cleaning, washing and empty container storage services.
Also In response to increased demand, PTP has increased its facilities to handle reefer (refrigerated) trade. Current reefer points operational have been increased to 1,470 points. The reefers’s building structure can accommodate up to 4 containers high at a time, each with 7 rows and 12 slots. The reefer points will be powered by multiple nearby sub-stations. The points are also fully backed-up by back-up generators, to ensure uninterrupted power supply for refrigerated containers during storage. A further 1,000 points are planned this year where construction will be determined by demands for such facilities from shipping lines and shippers using the port. Reefer points for storage of refrigerated containers are vital to a container terminal as refrigerated containers currently constitute a significant proportion of containers.
With the facilities in place, PTP is currently targetting local shippers exporting and importing perishable goods and dairy products that need a constant cooling environment.
PTP is strategically located at the southwest shoulder of Johor with a minimum 45 minutes diversion time from the confluence of the main international shipping lanes. With depths of 15 metres, Phase One of PTP has been constructed to cater towards Super Post Panamax vessels. The first four of 6 berths are currently operational with 14 Super Post Panamax quayside cranes and 36 Rubber-Tyred Gantry (RTG) cranes. The berths are backed by one of the largest container yards in the region having a storage capacity of 110,000 TEUs. On full Phase One completion by mid 2001, PTP will be capable of handling 4.5 million TEUs per annum.
Current services at PTP include Mitsui OSK Lines Japan/Hong Kong straits service, APL-NOL's West Asia Express and Maersk Sealand's full services to major destinations in the world. Current feeder lines include QC Container Line and Orient express Line’s weekly Chitaggong service, Bengal Tiger Lines services to the Indian Sub Continent and also Sembawang Kimtrans’ Singapore - PTP shuttle.
