KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 10 (Bernama) -- The Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP), South East Asia's fastest growing transhipment port, is set to increase its capacity with the construction of two more berths as part of its Phase 2 project.

The second phase, which started last year, is consisted of two main packages, the dredging and reclamation (D&R) for an additional eight berths of 2.88km and the physical construction of an additional two berths of 720m, PTP said in a statement, Friday.

The D&R for 2.88km of terminal is almost 75% completed.

The dredging process will widen the port's access channel from 250m to 420m and increase the draft to 16m from the current 15m.

The draft alongside will also be increased to 19.5m to ensure PTP's readiness to cater for the next generation of container vessels.

PTP said the first 360m berth is scheduled to be completed early 2004 and the second one shortly after.

The two berths is a linear extension from Phase 1 with a slight five degree curve.

The port plans to acquire additional Super Post Panamax quayside cranes for the new berths.

The completion of the 720m of Phase 2 will boost PTP's capacity by approximately another one million TEUs.

PTP's current annual capacity is five million TEUs. -- BERNAMA
