PTP Receives 5 Yard Cranes from Noell

The Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP), Southeast Asia’s fastest growing transhipment hub today received 5 units of Rubber-Tyred Gantry (RTGs) from Noell Crane Systems GmbH of Italy. The RTGs are the second batch of 15 Rubber-Tyred Gantry cranes scheduled to be supplied by Noell to PTP.

At the terminal, the operations to off-load the RTGs using the roro (roll-on roll-off) method from its delivery barge, Zhong Ren 702 to the terminal went on smoothly, witnessed by PTP CEO, Mohd Sidik Shaik Osman, key customers and port staff. The cranes were rolled-off from its holding vessel to PTP’s terminal at Berth 6.
 
PTP CEO, Mohd Sidik Shaik Osman stated that “ This latest delivery of the RTGs increases our yard planning and terminal efficiency. It also increases the port’s handling capacity which for Phase One, will eventually be around 4.5 – 5 million TEUs per annum benefiting both current and future potential customers. “
 
Delivered to PTP in fully erect form, the quay cranes were fabricated in Xiamen, China. The barge Zhong Ren 702 took 8 days to to arrive in PTP, plying the route from the China port of Zhangzhou. The voyage of Zhong Ren 702, 91.49 metre long and having a gross tonnage of 2,804 metric tonnes was assisted by the tug Hu Jui 5 of 60.22m long and a gross tonnage of 950mt.

The RTGs have a capacity of 1 over 5 high, with a width of 7 containers across. Previously, PTP had received the first batch of 5 units of RTG cranes from Noell, which arrived on 23 January 2002 together with 2 units of the Super Post Panamax quayside cranes. With this delivery and commissioning, PTP will soon have 52 RTGs operational for its yard. The final batch of 5 RTGs from Noell will be delivered by end of second quarter of 2002. Another 15 units of RTGs will be acquired by end 2002 to make to the total number of RTGs for PTP’s Phase 1 operation to 72 units.
