PTP records staggering 25pc rise in frist half throughput

The Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) recorded its highest first half-year throughput ever, handling 2,010,620 TEUs (20-foot equivalents units) in the first six months of 2004.
It registered a staggering 25 per cent rise from the 1,604,650 TEUs handled during the same period last year.
Transshipment volumes during the first half of 2004, amounted 1,834,407 TEUs – ip 24.6 per cent on the 1,472.297 TEUs handled in the first six months of 2003.
Local cargo volumes posted a strong 22 per cent gorwth – up from the 63,526 TEUs handled in the first half of last year, to reach 77,576 TEUs in the first six months of 2004.
In the first half of 2004, a total of 1,584 vessels called at PTP compared with 1,504 in the same period in 200, registering an increase of 5.3 per cent.
The increase, according to a PTPstatement released in Kuala Lumpur yesterday, equates to around three extra calls per week.
With cargo volumes rising on major trade routes, in particular Asia-Europe, PTP is also experienced strong growth in volumes.
This enables PTP to continue to retain its premier position as a trans-shipment port.
The completion of the two additional berths expected by the middle of thus month will also increase the port’s capacity from 4.5 million TEUs to 6 million TEUs per annum.
Shippers have also continued to show their confidence in PTP, and growth in the volume of domestic cargo handled by the port, is a reflection of the faith entrusted in PTP by the local community, the statement said.
