PTP refutes MOL remarks

MALAYSIA’S Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) has refuted remarks attributed to Japanese carrier MOL, which has shifted its weekly calls from PTP to Singapore.
Osami Suzuki, MOL GM (liner planning), is reported to have said: “After Maersk moved most of its services from Singapore to PTP I think it got big too fast. I’m afraid they are not capable and experienced enough to handle such big volumes.” PTP said today that the statement was inaccurate and that MOL’s departure probably reflected its perception that the Singapore market would be easier to tap. “I never talked about PTP’s operational capability,” Suzuki told Fairplay today. He had spoken only in general terms, he clarified, saying: “While PTP seems cost-competitive, we have to evaluate service competitiveness as well. We will have to carefully watch how efficiently this new terminal can handle MSL’s enormous volume.”
