PTP's container freight station ready next month

The Star Maritime

The first Container Freight Station (CFS) of the Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) is well ahead of schedule and will be completed by March 2000.

Located at the back of the container yard and just beside the port’s fully IT integrated main gate, the CFS 1 is destined to be the nucleus hub for the Distripark that has an area of 423 acres.

CFS 2 is currently undergoing early stage of construction. By the time of completion, PTP will have two CFS, each with a floor space of 10,000 square meters. The design of the CFS was based on the characteristics of a Regional Distribution Centre, with an efficient layout to maximise productivity and built-in safety features.

The CFS was also designed on the premise of fast turnaround of cargo.

By ensuring productivity and turnaround, PTP also hopes to attract importers and exporters who would benefit from using CFS facilities at the port.

On operating the CFS operation, PTP is deliberating on 2 main options, either to self-operate or to outsource it to a third party logistics provider. Emphasis in deciding the options will be placed on value-added benefits to the port and the development of the Distripark. To date, various offers from Johor and Klang based logistics providers have been received from established parties interested in operating the CFS.

PTP’s strategy in marketing the CFS will be towards angling CFS use as the nucleus for port users to establish their own International Procurement offices and regional distribution centers in the Distripark. This will eventually lead to development of the port hinterland thereby contributing to an overall total logistics concept.

PTP’s CFS will, like the port, operate 24 hours a day and 365 days a year.
