The Port of Tanjung Pelepas' handling capacity has been increased by 33% to six million twenty-foot-equivalent units (TEUs) after the first two berths under phase two were recently completed.
In a statement on July 19, it said the berths, which total 720 metres in quayside length, can handle the next generation of container vessels well in excess of 10,000 TEUs capacity.
"With the berths completed and the land reclamation on the remaining six berths of phase two also completed, these will enable PTP to have a short lead time for the build-up of additional berths to respond to market demands," it said.
The statement also said the two new berths would increase the quay length by another 720 metres from the current 2.16 km. The new berths have a water depth alongside of 19 metres to cater for the largest planned ships, which will be in excess of 400 metres in length.
"With a new total length of 2.88km of wharf, the first two berths of phase two are expected to raise the annual handling capacity of PTP from 4.5 million TEUs to 6.0 million TEUs," it said.
PTP chief executive officer Datuk Mohd Sidik Shaik Osman said the new berths "will bring in new capacity that will enable us to market the port more aggressively to the shipping lines"
